The Importance of Positive Thinking

No one is going to think positively all the time, okay? No one. Positive thinking is useful, though, if you find yourself thinking the same negative things over and over again, or if you’re down in the dumps about a particular situation.

Sometimes it’s hard to remember to think positively, though, but this pretty easy switch came to me the other night and I had to share!

You can watch a video about it here, or go below to read about it.

Shifting from “I Want” to “I Have”

I was walking with my family the other night, and the same grumpy thoughts kept swirling and swirling in my head. It was silly stuff, really; the house down the street for us went up for sale, and I was looking at the photos, jealous that they have a basement and we do not.

I kept thinking things like, “I wish we had a basement,” and “I want a house with more space,” and other such things that were making me feel agitated and ungrateful.

All of a sudden, though, it came to me: Shift my thoughts from “I want” (or “I wish”) to “I have.”

After this revelation I started thinking things like “I have a lovely home on a dead end street,” “I love that horses live next door to us”, and “I have studio space in my own home, isn’t that great?”

This immediately improved my mood! It’s pretty much a way to switch from being grumpy about your life to being thankful for what you have, and we all know how important gratitude is.

I was glad this idea came to me, because just a few minutes later, I heard my daughter, who was up ahead riding her scooter while my husband rode a skateboard, crying.

I started jogging to get to where she was, and it turned out she’d fallen down and scraped her hands and knees. She didn’t want to use her scooter anymore, and wanted me to carry it while she ran ahead with my husband. As I started walking again, I started back in with some grumpy “I wish” kind of thoughts, wishing I wasn’t so hot (from running), wanting to be back to the car, not wanting to carry the scooter, etc.

Luckily, the idea of switching my focus to what I had really helped, and once I started being thankful that I had a nice place to walk, thankful for my active family, thankful for the breeze, and on and on, I felt much, much better!

Positive Thinking For A Happier Life

Overall, if you choose to think happier thoughts, you’ll feel better. My life feels much calmer and more content when I stop, get into the present moment, and focus on what I have rather than what I want. I hope this helps you, too!
